Did you know that Halloween began as an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain, celebrated at the end of October to mark the transition from autumn to winter. People believed that, on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred, so they lit bonfires and wore costumes to keep away spirits. Later, the Christian church established All Saints’ Day (also called All Hallows’ Day) on November 1 and made the evening before “All Hallows’ Eve” — which became Halloween. Many Christian customs were blended into this celebration, such as remembering the dead and attending church to pray for dead loved ones, and honor the lives of saints and martyrs.
